In the Middle Ages it was considered that the nature couldn’t become a picture theme. Usually landscapes appeared on cloths as a background for any historical scene. Sometimes the landscape consisted only of several rocks — one guide on painting of XIV century even advised to artists to heat up rocks on the background. But in XVI-XVII centuries the relation to landscapes began to vary.

In XV century artists have started to comprehend prospect laws. This revolutionary opening has allowed them to represent space more precisely. Hence, they could create more realistic landscapes. It gradually began to appear pictures, where the landscape played more important role, than people, and even pictures, where at all there were no people.

To seventeenth century the nature became a popular theme in painting, and a landscape — a full genre. Artists, especially in Northern Europe, created a large quantity of landscapes — from imagined idyllic scenes to the most detailed kinds of real places.

The first landscape writers did not create a picture directly outside on the nature. Having made some sketches, they came back in studio and already finished the work there. But in the middle of nineteenth century there was a fashion to write pictures in the open air. Artists were inspired by a changeable play of light and the atmospheric phenomena, and they aspired to write landscapes directly “from nature”.

Eventually the relation of artists to landscapes varied not less, than landscapes. For last century there were especially many various styles — from frightening urban landscapes of cubists and lyrical city images to “land-art” (artists of this direction work with a landscape, using for creation of the works the ground, stones and other natural materials). As a source of inspiration for artists of “land-art” serves the surrounding landscape, and their products become its part then.

Still life works.

The still life is an image of motionless objects, such, as flowers or fruit, musical instruments etc.
Till the end of nineteenth century main principles of creation of still life works were defined by aspiration to make them, as it is possible realistic. And artists have reached such skill in it that could represent everything — from a bunch of grapes, which looks so realistic, to jugs and bowls which, apparently, go beyond from a picture plane.

Creation of a still life works demands the big skill. It is necessary for artist to make an interesting composition, to show light, the texture of subjects. Such pictures force you to believe that you look at real volume subjects, instead of on the plane covered with paint. However, critics up to nineteenth century scornfully concerned still life art — they saw only practice in the picturesque techniques in it.

The still life can be the simple image of subjects, and can comprise any hidden sense. Artists often make a composition expressing certain ideas. So, books symbolize knowledge, musical instruments — pleasure, and skulls, trembling body of flame or decaying fruit urged to remind of death. Pictures with the hidden symbolical sense are called as allegories. Allegorical pictures became so popular that some artists almost have completely devoted themselves to this genre.

The term “art” can define the most different objects — from prehistoric drawings on stones and ceramics to obstruction of household and industrial stuff in art galleries. But though to art area also refer music, theatre, ballet and the literature, more often this term means the fine arts, and first of all painting.

For centuries people tried to understand what is art. Artists and critics quarreled and argued about this, adhering to the most different opinions. The French artist Manet has so strongly differed in opinion from one of critics that has challenged him on duel. There are many questions at issue, but there is not and will not be unequivocal, intelligible answers. Everybody has own tastes and opinions — and only you should choose what you like more.

For someone art should be, first of all, fine, for others — realistic, for third it is more important, that it transfers mood or feeling. There are many diversified pictures in the world: one differs with almost photographic accuracy, others are much more outlined, but very precisely shows the mood …

One people believe that art should express certain ideas; others prefer to enjoy art for the sake of art. Just about it impressionists also had big discussions — someone from them considered that it is necessary to reproduce scenes from a modern life, others were more interested in studying of influence of light on subjects.

It frequently becomes a subject of fierce disputes also cost of art works. Vincent Van Gogh has died in poverty as nobody wished to buy his pictures, and today his art works have big prices among the most valuable works of art in the world.

To help the spectator to understand sense of a picture, artists frequently place the hidden helps — symbols on it. They are connected with the general concepts sometimes. For example, the book symbolizes the doctrine, a sword or other weapon – fights, and a blossoming branch of a tree or a flower – beauty and pleasure. Besides, symbols help to understand, who is represented in a picture. Known characters, for example sacred, are often represented with the symbolical subjects associating with history of their life so experts can understand whom the artist has presented in the picture. In any pictures it is possible to find set of helps – here only it is necessary to know what to search.

For perception of a picture it is also very important to know, for what purpose it was created: did the artist wish to decorate a palace with it or write it for church? And it can be, it intended for an exhibition in gallery where visitors would admire with the beauty or it would force them to reflect on the ideas expressed in it… Is there in product any political, social either moral sense or the main thing in it is to express emotions?

Though… Artist Renoir wrote various paintings, and people bought his pictures just because they liked them.

At studying of painting works is important not only style of the image, but also paints. Art materials and methods were changed. The manner of painting is so individual, as handwriting. Some artists put paints smoothly, creating a smooth surface; others use separate, sometimes sharp dabs. Everything depends only on preference of the artist.
